Glen Mhor stood in Inverness, in the northern Highlands, next to its neighbour Glen Albyn. It was built in the 1890s and for much of its life was run by Mackinlay & Birnie, with its whisky an important part of the Mackinlay's blends. The novelist Neil Gunn once worked there as an exciseman.

The distillery later passed to the Distillers Company and was closed in 1983, during the wave of closures that hit Scotch whisky in the early 1980s. The buildings were demolished a few years later, so no more Glen Mhor will ever be made.

Official bottlings were never common. Collectors look for old releases such as the 10 Year Old from the 1970s and the 22 Year Old 1979 in the Rare Malts series from United Distillers.

Most Glen Mhor on the market today comes from independent bottlers. Gordon & MacPhail bottled it for decades, including a 15 Year Old and vintages in its Private Collection, and casks have also appeared from Douglas Laing (Old Malt Cask), Signatory Vintage, Duncan Taylor, Berry Bros and the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, under code 57. As stocks run down, these bottles are becoming scarce and expensive.
