GlenDronach lies in the valley of Forgue, near Huntly in Aberdeenshire, at the eastern edge of the Highlands close to Speyside. It was founded in 1826. The distillery was mothballed from 1996 to 2002, and in 2008 it was bought by the BenRiach Distillery Company. Since 2016 it has belonged to Brown-Forman.
GlenDronach is best known for maturing much of its spirit in sherry casks, both Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez, which gives deep, fruity, dried fruit and spice flavours. The stills were heated by coal until 2005.
The distillery is famous for its single cask releases, bottled at cask strength in batches with vintage and cask number on the label. Other ranges include Cask Strength batches, Grandeur, Traditionally Peated, the 10 Year Old Port Wood and The Master's Anthology series, plus shop and distillery exclusives.
Independent bottlings are less common than official ones, but casks do appear from bottlers such as Douglas Laing, Moon Import and Ian Macleod.
