Inverleven was built in 1938 within the large Dumbarton grain distillery on the River Leven, west of Glasgow, owned by Hiram Walker. It made malt whisky mostly for blends such as Ballantine's, and was closed in 1991. The Dumbarton site has since been demolished.

Alongside its pot stills, Inverleven housed a Lomond still, an experimental design that made a separate malt called Lomond. That still was later moved to Bruichladdich on Islay, where it is used for gin.

The spirit was a light, grassy and fruity Lowland style, and old casks have aged gently into delicate, honeyed whiskies. There were almost no official single malt releases, so nearly every bottle you will find comes from independent bottlers.

Gordon & MacPhail have been the main source, through Connoisseurs Choice, their Licensed Bottlings, Rare Old and the Private Collection. Signatory Vintage, including its Cask Strength Collection, and the Scotch Malt Whisky Society under code 20 have also released it. As stock is finite, prices tend to rise.
