Kilkerran is made at Glengyle distillery in Campbeltown. The original Glengyle closed in the 1920s, and the site was brought back to life by Mitchell's Glengyle Ltd, the company behind Springbank, with distilling restarting in 2004. Because the Glengyle name was already in use for another whisky, the single malt is sold as Kilkerran, after the old Gaelic name for the area.
The distillery works closely with Springbank next door: its malt comes from Springbank's floor maltings, and the whisky is bottled at Springbank in Campbeltown. The stills came second-hand from the Ben Wyvis distillery. The house style is lightly peated, with a waxy, fruity and slightly salty character typical of Campbeltown.
While the spirit matured, the distillery released a series called Work in Progress, editions 1 to 7, letting drinkers follow the whisky as it aged, including a sherry version of WIP 7. Since then the range has settled around the 12 Year Old and the 8 Year Old Cask Strength, alongside Heavily Peated batches, small batch releases, single casks and occasional Open Day bottlings such as the 16 Year Old for 2022.
