Mac-Talla, Gaelic for echo, is an Islay single malt brand created by Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers. The Morrison family has long ties to Islay, having owned Bowmore distillery for many years, and the brand is meant as a return to the island.
The whisky is distilled at an Islay distillery that is not named and bottled by the Morrisons. It is a peated, coastal style of Islay malt, offered at different strengths and ages.
The core range is built on three names: Terra, the entry bottling; Strata, including a 15 Year Old Strata; and Mara, bottled at cask strength. Around these sit limited releases with different cask finishes, such as Red Wine Barriques, Oloroso and PX editions, the yearly Lighthouse Editions, and special bottlings for the Fèis Ìle festival, including a 2009 rum cask and an Amarone cask for Friends of the Fèis.
For buyers, the core three offer a straightforward way into peated Islay malt, while the limited editions appeal to those who follow cask experiments.
