The Scotch Malt Whisky Society began in 1983 in Leith, Edinburgh, when a group of friends shared a cask bought from a distillery. It grew into a members' club with venues and branches in many countries, and it is now part of The Artisanal Spirits Company.
The Society buys casks of whisky and bottles each one on its own, so every release is a single cask. Bottlings are usually at cask strength, without chill filtration and without added colouring. Some casks are moved into a second cask for further maturation before bottling.
Instead of naming the distillery, the Society labels each bottle with a code: the first number stands for the distillery and the second for the cask. Cask 29.300, for example, is a Laphroaig, 53.508 a Caol Ila, 10.274 a Bunnahabhain and 27.112 a Springbank. Each bottle also carries a playful descriptive name, as with The Spirit of Hallowe'en or Winter Solstice 2024.
Distilleries in our catalogue include Laphroaig, Caol Ila, Bunnahabhain, Highland Park, Springbank, Macallan, Aultmore and the closed Dallas Dhu. Because each cask produces a limited number of bottles, releases sell out and rarely return.
