The new Midleton distillery was built by Irish Distillers beside the old Midleton distillery in County Cork and began production in 1975, when the company moved its distilling there from Dublin and Cork city. Irish Distillers has been part of Pernod Ricard since 1988. Today Midleton is one of the largest distilleries in Ireland.
The site holds pot stills, column stills and a microdistillery. Its signature is single pot still whiskey, made from a mash of malted and unmalted barley and triple distilled in copper pot stills, which gives a creamy, spicy texture. Grain whiskey from the column stills is used for blends such as Jameson.
Midleton Very Rare, first released in 1984, is a blend of pot still and grain whiskey issued as a new vintage each year, which is why collectors look for specific bottling years. Barry Crockett Legacy is a single pot still named after the longtime master distiller. The Dair Ghaelach releases are single pot still whiskeys finished in virgin Irish oak, each batch tied to a single named tree and forest, such as Kylebeg Wood or Knockrath Forest.
The Midleton Silent Distillery series is different: it draws on very old stock from the original Midleton distillery that worked before 1975. Midleton whiskey is rarely bottled by independents; the Redbreast and other names in our data are Irish Distillers' own brands.
