Convalmore was built in Dufftown, in the heart of Speyside, in 1894. For most of its life it supplied malt for blended Scotch rather than single malt bottlings, and it was closed in 1985 when its owners cut capacity across the industry.
The buildings were later sold to William Grant & Sons, who use them for warehousing, while the brand and remaining stocks stayed with Diageo. No new spirit has been made since the closure, so every bottle on the market is old and stocks are steadily shrinking.
Official bottlings are rare and come mainly through Diageo Special Releases, such as the 1977 36 Year Old and the 32 Year Old 1984 from 2017. Independent bottlings are an important part of the story: Gordon & MacPhail has released Convalmore in its Connoisseurs Choice, Rare Old and Private Collection ranges, including single casks from 1975 and 1982.
