The Isle of Raasay Distillery sits on the small island of Raasay, across the water from Skye, in a converted Victorian house that also offers rooms for visitors. It was founded by R&B Distillers and began distilling in 2017, the first legal distillery on the island.
The distillery makes two spirits, one unpeated and one lightly peated, and combines them in its core whisky. The stills were made in Italy, and the spirit still has a cooling jacket on its lyne arm to add copper contact and produce a cleaner, fruitier spirit. Water comes from a well on the island, and some releases use barley grown on Raasay itself.
Cask choice shapes the style. The flagship Isle of Raasay Single Malt is a vatting of peated and unpeated spirit from casks including ex-rye whiskey, virgin Chinkapin oak and Bordeaux red wine. Buyers meet the batch releases, the Cask Strength editions, Isle of Dùn Cana, The Chinkapin, a Marsala Cask release and the Na Sia Single Cask Series, which shows the individual cask types one at a time.
As a young distillery, Raasay is mostly bottled officially. A few independent bottlings exist, such as single casks from Berry Bros. & Rudd, along with special releases for shops and festivals.
