Saburomaru Distillery belongs to Wakatsuru Shuzo, a long-established sake brewery in Tonami, Toyama Prefecture, Japan. Our catalogue lists it under Scotland, but it is a Japanese distillery. Wakatsuru has made whisky since the early 1950s, and the distillery was renovated in the late 2010s, partly with funds raised through crowdfunding.

What sets it apart is its stills. Saburomaru uses ZEMON pot stills cast from bronze, made with a local metal craft firm from Takaoka, a town known for casting. The distillery mainly makes heavily peated malt spirit.

Its best known single malts are numbered after the tarot cards: The Empress (III), The Emperor (IV) and The Hierophant (V) appear in our catalogue, alongside The Sun. Each release marks another step in the distillery's new era. The Junenmyo bottlings, such as Junenmyo 7, Noir and Rouge, form a separate Wakatsuru line.
