About Saburomaru Distillery

Wakatsuru Shuzo

Saburomaru Distillery belongs to Wakatsuru Shuzo, a sake brewery in Tonami, Toyama Prefecture, on the Sea of Japan side of Honshu. The company began making whisky in the early 1950s, making it one of the older whisky producers in the Hokuriku region.

The distillery was renovated in the late 2010s, partly funded through crowdfunding. A distinctive step was the installation of pot stills cast from a copper alloy rather than hammered from sheet copper, using the casting skills of the nearby town of Takaoka, which is known for metal casting. The house style is a heavily peated malt spirit.

The best-known single malt releases form a series named after tarot cards, released one card at a time as the spirit matures: buyers will meet Saburomaru III The Empress, IV The Emperor and V The Hierophant. The Sun Final is a further limited release from the distillery.

The Junenmyo bottlings, such as Junenmyo 7 Seven, Rouge and Noir, are a separate range from the same company, offering a different and more accessible entry point to its whiskies.
