A. D. Rattray takes its name from Andrew Dewar Rattray, who set up as a whisky blender and merchant in Perth in 1868. The name was revived in 2004 by Tim Morrison, from the family long involved with Morrison Bowmore, and the company now works from Ayrshire, where it also runs a whisky shop and visitor experience.
As an independent bottler, A. D. Rattray does not distil. It buys casks of whisky from distilleries across Scotland and bottles them under its own labels. The bottles in its Cask Collection are mostly single casks, with the cask number, vintage and age on the label, and are generally bottled at cask strength without chill filtration or added colouring.
The range of distilleries is wide: in our catalogue you will find whiskies from Glenrothes, Craigellachie, Macduff, Glentauchers, Ardmore, Loch Lomond and the Invergordon grain distillery, among others. Some appear under alternative names, such as Ardlair, an unpeated malt from Ardmore, and Croftengea, a peated style made at Loch Lomond. The Vintage Cask Collection holds older single casks.
Cask Orkney is a single malt from an Orkney distillery that is not named on the label, offered at ages such as 15 and 18 years. Because each Cask Collection bottle is a single cask, two bottles from the same distillery can taste quite different, so the cask details are worth reading.
