North Port stood in Brechin, Angus, and took its name from the town's north gate. It was founded around 1820 and run for much of its life by the Guthrie family. The Distillers Company closed it in 1983 and the buildings were later demolished.
Its whisky is often described as robust and slightly oily, and it was rarely bottled as a single malt while the distillery worked. Today all bottlings come from remaining casks, so they are old and increasingly scarce.
Official releases appeared in Diageo's Special Releases. Most bottles a buyer meets, though, are from independent bottlers: Signatory Vintage, Gordon & MacPhail's Connoisseurs Choice, Duncan Taylor, Cadenhead and Scotch Malt Whisky Society casks such as SMWS 74.2 and 74.5. Labels may say North Port, Brechin or both.
