West Cork Distillers was started in the early 2000s by a small group of local founders and is now based in Skibbereen, in the far south west of County Cork. It is one of the independent producers that helped bring new life to Irish whiskey before the recent wave of new distilleries.
The house style is approachable and fruity, with a lot of attention paid to cask finishing. The distillery likes to experiment with wood. Its Glengarriff Series uses casks charred with local peat or with bog oak, giving a gentle smoky edge without peated malt.
Buyers will meet a broad range: the West Cork 5yo Bourbon Cask Matured, the 10 Year Old Single Malt, 12 Year Old Port Cask and Rum Cask finishes, single malts finished in port, rum or virgin oak casks, and a West Cork Cask Strength. The Glengarriff Series includes the Peat Charred Cask Finish and the Bog Oak bottlings.
The distillery also produces The Pogues Irish Single Malt and The Pogues Blended Whiskey, a brand linked to the Irish band of the same name. Prices across the range are generally modest, which makes West Cork an easy entry point into Irish single malt.
