Tomintoul distillery was built in the mid 1960s in the Glenlivet area, near Ballindalloch and a few miles from Tomintoul, one of the highest villages in the Highlands. It has been owned by Angus Dundee Distillers since 2000, and much of its spirit also goes into blends.
The house style is light and mellow, and the brand has long called itself the gentle dram. Most Tomintoul is unpeated, but the distillery also makes a heavily peated spirit, sold as Old Ballantruan, and the 15 Year Old with a Peaty Tang sits between the two.
The official range runs from the 10 Year Old through the 14, 16, 18 and 25 Year Old, up to very old releases such as the 40 Year Old Quadruple Cask. Tomintoul also bottles many cask finishes, including Cognac, Sauternes, Madeira, Tawny Port and White Port.
Independent bottlings are fairly common. Gordon & MacPhail, Signatory Vintage, Douglas Laing, Hunter Laing, Master of Malt, Darkness and Dràm Mòr have all released it, often as single casks.
