Longrow is one of three single malts made at Springbank distillery in Campbeltown, alongside Springbank and Hazelburn. It takes its name from an old Campbeltown distillery that once stood next to Springbank, and was first distilled at Springbank in 1973.
What sets Longrow apart is its malt and distillation. The barley is heavily peated, dried entirely over peat smoke, and the spirit is distilled twice, rather than the two and a half times used for Springbank. The result is a smoky, oily whisky with a distinctly coastal, slightly earthy edge.
Like all whisky from the distillery, Longrow is malted, distilled, matured and bottled on site by J. & A. Mitchell & Co. Springbank is known for bottling without chill filtration or added colour. Buyers will meet the no-age-statement Longrow and the CV, the 18 and 21 Year Old, and the Longrow Red series, which uses red wine and port casks such as Cabernet Franc, Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon and Tawny Port.
Older and rarer bottlings also circulate, including early 2000s 14 Year Olds, sherry wood vintages, a Barolo finish, private single casks, and a 1973 release from the Italian importer Moon Import in its Birds series.
