Stauning Whisky takes its name from the village of Stauning in West Jutland, on Denmark's west coast. It was started by a group of local friends who wanted to make whisky from Danish grain. It grew from a small farm operation into a larger distillery. Despite the Islay label in some listings, this is a Danish producer.
The distillery malts its own barley and rye on traditional malting floors and distils in small pot stills. For its smoky spirit it uses local Danish peat in the kiln. The result is two families of whisky: grainy, spicy rye and malt whisky in peated and unpeated forms.
In the official range a buyer will meet Rye, Peat and Smoke, along with KAOS, which combines rye and malt whisky, and El Clásico and Bastard. There are also cask-finished rye bottlings, such as the Rum Cask Finish, the Sweet Wine Casks and Douro Dreams, plus design editions and an advent calendar.
Stauning is also bottled now and then by independent bottlers. In our catalogue these include That Boutique-y Whisky Company, with a 3 Year Old rye, The Heart Cut, and Berry Bros. & Rudd.
