Blackadder is an independent bottler of Scotch whisky that has been releasing single cask bottlings since the mid 1990s. The name refers to John Blackadder, a 17th century Scottish Covenanter minister.
The company buys casks from distilleries and bottles them under its own labels. Most releases are single casks, and the label usually gives the distillery, the distilling year, the age and the cask number, so each bottling is a small batch with its own character.
The best known range is Raw Cask. These whiskies are bottled at cask strength, without chill filtration and without added colouring, and are not filtered at all, so small pieces of charred wood or sediment from the cask can end up in the bottle. Buyers will see releases such as sherry butt and refill PX hogshead single casks listed by cask number.
In our catalogue Blackadder bottles come from a wide spread of distilleries, including Highland Park, Caol Ila, Ardmore, Benrinnes, Glentauchers, Macduff and the closed Glenesk, as well as the Dutch distillery Zuidam. Older bottlings from the 1980s also turn up on the secondary market.
