Pulteney

Pulteney distillery stands in Wick, in Caithness, on the far north-east coast of the Scottish mainland. It was founded in 1826 and named after Pulteneytown, the planned fishing settlement built around Wick's herring harbour. Its long ties to the sea and the fishing fleet shape how the whisky is presented today.

The distillery is unusual to look at inside. Its wash still has a large boil ball and a flattened, cut-off top rather than a classic swan neck, and the spirit is condensed in worm tubs. Pulteney is generally unpeated, and the result is a spirit with some weight and oiliness alongside the fresh, slightly salty character that drinkers often call maritime.

The distillery is owned by Inver House Distillers and is bottled officially as Old Pulteney. A buyer will meet the core age statements such as the Old 12 years, the Old 25 Year Old, and various older or vintage releases, together with the Coastal Series of cask finishes (for example Pineau des Charentes) and a Traveller's Exclusive range for airport shops.

Pulteney also turns up regularly from independent bottlers.
