Père Labat is the rum of Distillerie Poisson on Marie-Galante, a small island in the French Caribbean department of Guadeloupe. It takes its name from Père Jean-Baptiste Labat, a Dominican priest who wrote about the islands and their sugar and spirit making around 1700.
Like other rhum agricole, it is distilled from fresh sugar cane juice rather than molasses, which gives a grassy, fruity spirit. Marie-Galante is known for strong white rhums, and Père Labat bottles its unaged rum at several strengths: Rhum Blanc 40, Rhum Blanc 59, Rhum Soleil 55 and the Rhum Blanc 70.7 Brut de Colonne, bottled close to still strength.
The aged side of the range runs from the Rhum Elevé Sous Bois to the Rhum Extra Vieux Hors d'Age 8 Years Old, plus single cask vintages such as the Millésime 2004 and 2010. Limited releases like Clos Parcellaire Les Mangles, Grand Diplomate and Revelation Double Distillation show the distillery experimenting with single plots of cane and different distillation. For whisky drinkers, the aged single casks are a natural entry point.
