The Famous Grouse began in Perth, where the Gloag family ran a grocery and wine business and started blending whisky in the 19th century. Their blend, first sold as The Grouse, took the name The Famous Grouse early in the 20th century and went on to become one of Scotland's most popular blends.
It is a brand rather than a single distillery, so there is no Famous Grouse still house. The blend is built from malt and grain whiskies from across Scotland. Malts from the owner's own distilleries, Highland Park and The Macallan, have long been named as part of the recipe. For many years The Glenturret in Crieff served as the brand's visitor home, until that distillery was sold in 2019.
The house style is soft, rounded and lightly sweet, with sherry-cask influence playing a part. The core Famous Grouse is a staple for mixing and everyday drinking, while The Famous One is a related bottling in the family.
Naked Malt, formerly sold as The Naked Grouse, is a blended malt with no grain whisky, matured with a strong sherry-cask character. The Snow Grouse is a lighter style designed to be served chilled, and limited releases such as Alpha Edition appear from time to time.
