Scapa sits on the shore of Scapa Flow just outside Kirkwall on Orkney, a short distance from Highland Park. It was founded in 1885 and has been through several owners and quiet periods, including a spell in the 1990s and early 2000s with only limited production. Today it belongs to Chivas Brothers, part of Pernod Ricard.
Unlike its neighbour, Scapa makes unpeated whisky. The distillery is known for its Lomond-type wash still, an unusual design that contributes to an oily, fruity spirit. The house style is honeyed and soft, with a light coastal note.
The main official bottling is The Orcadian Glansa, finished in casks that previously held peated whisky. Older official releases include the Scapa 12 Year Old and 14 Year Old, and Chivas has released single casks in its Distillery Reserve Collection.
Scapa is also bottled by independents. Gordon & MacPhail has released many vintages in its Connoisseurs Choice range, Douglas Laing has bottled it in the Old Malt Cask series, and the Scotch Malt Whisky Society bottles it under its code 17.
