Sagamore Spirit was founded in 2013 in Maryland, a state that had a long rye whiskey tradition before Prohibition. Its co-founders include Kevin Plank, founder of Under Armour, and the name comes from Sagamore Farm, the historic horse farm he owns in Maryland.
The distillery opened in 2017 on the waterfront in Baltimore's Port Covington. Its early whiskeys were sourced from Indiana while its own stocks matured, made from a blend of a high-rye recipe and a lower-rye recipe. The whiskey is cut to bottling strength with water from a spring on Sagamore Farm.
The Signature Rye is the everyday bottling, with a Cask Strength version and a Bottled in Bond Straight Rye for those who want more power. The Double Oak Rye gets a second spell in a fresh charred barrel.
The Reserve Series explores finishes, including sherry, rum and tequila casks. The distillery has also branched out with a High Rye Bourbon.
