Kurayoshi is the whisky brand of Matsui Shuzo, a long-established drinks maker in the town of Kurayoshi in Tottori prefecture, western Japan. The company is better known historically for shochu and other spirits, and moved into whisky in the 2010s.
Buyers should know that many Kurayoshi bottlings are blends of whisky sourced from outside the company, and not all of it from Japan. The Pure Malt bottlings, such as The 8Y Pure Malt, The Sherry Pure Malt and the 12 and 18 year olds, are blended malts, and some labels say World Blended Malt. Matsui Shuzo has since installed its own pot stills at the Kurayoshi distillery.
The single malt line is sold under The Matsui name. The best known are The Matsui Sakura Cask, finished in cherry wood, and The Matsui Mizunara Cask, using Japanese oak, with occasional single cask releases. There is also a Kurayoshi Single Malt and a Tottori Bourbon Barrel blended whisky.
The ranges are easy to find in Europe and gift packs are common. Reading the label closely helps: single malt and pure malt mean quite different things here.
