Glenugie stood at Peterhead in Aberdeenshire, making it one of the most easterly distilleries in Scotland. It had a long and interrupted history, changing hands several times, and was closed in 1983 during the wave of closures that hit the Scotch whisky industry at that time. The buildings were later demolished.
Because production stopped decades ago, every bottle of Glenugie comes from a shrinking stock of old casks. Its whisky is generally described as a robust, fruity Highland malt, and many surviving bottlings come from sherry casks.
Official releases were few, such as an old 5 Year Old bottled in the 1980s. Most bottles on the market come from independent bottlers: Gordon & MacPhail with its Connoisseurs Choice and Rare Old ranges, Signatory Vintage, Blackadder, Duncan Taylor, Murray McDavid and Hart Brothers. A Chivas Brothers Cask Strength Edition also exists.
For collectors, Glenugie is a lost distillery whose bottles turn up mostly at auction or from specialist shops, with vintages from the 1960s to the early 1980s.
