Smögen Whisky was founded in 2010 by Pär Caldenby near Hunnebostrand on the Bohuslän coast of western Sweden. It is named after the nearby fishing village of Smögen and is one of the smallest whisky producers in the country.
The spirit is made from heavily peated malt and distilled slowly in small pot stills, giving a dense, smoky and oily new make. Caldenby has drawn closely on traditional Scotch methods, and the whisky is matured in a range of casks, with sherry casks playing a large role.
The first official release was Primör, a 3 Year Old from 2010. Since then the distillery has released many single casks and small batches, including the Sherry Project series and numbered Single Cask Editions, as well as older bottlings such as 8 Year Old batches.
Smögen is also popular with independent bottlers. Casks have appeared from That Boutique-y Whisky Company, Decadent Drinks, Berry Bros. & Rudd and Adelphi, which makes these bottlings a useful way to compare how the spirit behaves in different casks.
