Glen Deveron was for decades the official single malt name of Macduff distillery, which stands by the mouth of the River Deveron near the coastal towns of Banff and Macduff in north east Scotland. The distillery was built around 1960, and most of its spirit has always gone into blends, especially Dewar's.
The distillery is owned by John Dewar and Sons, part of Bacardi, which bought it in 1998. Under Dewar's the brand was relaunched as The Deveron, which is why both names appear in our catalogue. The labels have described the whisky as both Highland and Speyside over the years, as the distillery sits on the border between the two.
The style is generally light and fruity, with a gentle malty character and little or no peat. The ranges a buyer meets include the current The Deveron 10 and 12 year olds, the travel retail Royal Burgh Collection (16, 20 and 30 years old), and older Glen Deveron bottlings such as the 5, 8 and 12 year olds from the 1970s and 1980s, which are now collectors' items.
Because the official brand carries the Deveron name, independent bottlers usually sell this spirit as Macduff. Those bottlings are worth looking at alongside the official ones.
