St. Magdalene stood in Linlithgow, in West Lothian, on land once linked to a medieval hospital of St Mary Magdalene. It was a sizeable Lowland malt distillery beside the Union Canal and the railway, and for most of the 20th century it supplied malt whisky for blends under the Distillers Company.
The distillery closed in 1983, in the wave of closures that also took several other Scottish distilleries, and it never reopened. Parts of the buildings were later converted into housing. With no new spirit being made, every bottle comes from a limited and shrinking stock, much of it distilled in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
The style is a light to medium Lowland malt, often described as grassy and floral when young, gaining waxy, fruity and sometimes earthy notes with long ageing. Older bottlings vary a lot from cask to cask, so tasting notes for individual releases are worth reading.
Independent bottlers account for most of what buyers find. Gordon & MacPhail released it in its Connoisseurs Choice series, Douglas Laing in Old Malt Cask, and you will also see Murray McDavid, Mackillop's Choice, Carn Mor, Glenkeir Treasures and van Wees bottlings, often labelled Linlithgow. Many of these come from the 1982 vintage, just before the closure.
