William Hinton is a Madeiran rum named after the Hinton family, who were long involved in sugar production on the island. Madeira has grown sugarcane for centuries, and its rum made from fresh cane juice carries the protected name Rum Agricola da Madeira.
Because it is made from pressed cane juice rather than molasses, the spirit tends to be grassy and fruity, closer in style to French Caribbean rhum agricole than to most molasses rums. The producer is part of a small group of active rum makers on the island.
It appears on a whisky site because of its cask work. The 6 Years Old rums are released after ageing in different casks, including French brandy, whisky, Spanish fortified wine, Portuguese fortified wine and aquavit casks, alongside a plain Agricola da Madeira bottling.
Limited editions such as Fermentacao Natural, Ginja and 600 Anos complete the range. These are usually small releases, so they suit drinkers curious to see how a cask changes a cane spirit.
