Fernando de Castilla is a bodega in Jerez de la Frontera in Andalusia, the heart of sherry country. It makes fortified wines and brandy rather than whisky, but its bottles sit well alongside whisky for anyone curious about the wines that season so many sherry casks.
The house works in the traditional solera system, where wines are aged and blended across rows of casks of different ages. Its range covers the full sherry spectrum, from the pale, dry fino and manzanilla styles through amontillado, palo cortado and oloroso to the sweet Pedro Ximenez and cream sherries.
Buyers will meet two main tiers. The Classic wines, such as the Fino Classic Dry, Manzanilla Classic and Oloroso Classic, are the house's everyday styles. The Antique range, including Fino, Amontillado, Oloroso and Palo Cortado Antique, holds older and more concentrated wines, with bottlings such as the Amontillado Rare Old and PX Excepcional Singular alongside.
The Solera Gran Reserva is the bodega's brandy de Jerez, aged in the same solera tradition as its wines.
