Lochside stood in Montrose on the Angus coast, in a former brewery building. It was converted into a distillery in 1957 by Joseph Hobbs, who for a time made both grain whisky in a column still and malt whisky in pot stills on the same site.
In the 1970s the distillery passed to the Spanish company DYC, and much of its output went into blends. Production stopped in 1992 and the buildings were later demolished, so the stocks that remain are finite and ageing.
Official single malt bottlings were few, so Lochside is mostly known through independent bottlers. A buyer will meet Gordon & MacPhail's Connoisseurs Choice and Rare Old, Douglas Laing's Old Malt Cask, Berry Bros & Rudd's Berry's Own, The Vintage Malt Whisky Co's The Cooper's Choice, and single casks from the Scotch Malt Whisky Society and Jack Wiebers. Vintages from 1966 and 1981 are especially well regarded by collectors.
