The Famous Grouse began with the Gloag family, grocers and wine merchants in Perth. Matthew Gloag launched the blend in the 1890s as The Grouse Brand, and it soon became The Famous Grouse. Today it is owned by Edrington and has for many years been one of the most popular whiskies in Scotland.
It is a blended Scotch, combining grain whisky with malts. Edrington's own malts, including those of Macallan and Highland Park, have traditionally played a part, and Glenturret near Crieff long served as the brand's visitor home before that distillery was sold. The house style is smooth, light and gently sweet, with sherry cask influence.
The standard Famous Grouse is the bottle most buyers know, sold in sizes from minis to magnums and larger. Around it sit variations such as Smoky Black (a peatier version), cask finishes like Sherry Cask, Bourbon Cask and Ruby Cask, and older blends such as the 12 Year Old Gold Reserve and the 16 Year Old Double Matured.
