Port Dundas stood in the north of Glasgow, beside the canal that gave the area its name. For many years it was one of the largest grain distilleries in Scotland, supplying whisky for blends. Diageo closed it in 2010 and the site has since been demolished, so all bottlings come from remaining casks.
As a grain distillery it worked with column stills, making a lighter spirit from cereals such as wheat or maize with a share of malted barley. With long ageing, especially in ex-bourbon casks, Port Dundas grain tends to show sweet notes of vanilla, toffee and coconut.
Official bottlings are scarce; the best known is the 20 Year Old in Diageo's Special Releases from 2011. Most bottles come from independent bottlers: Douglas Laing's Old Particular, Hunter Laing and related labels such as Director's Cut, Sovereign and Clan Denny, Signatory Vintage cask strength releases, and others like That Boutique-y Whisky Company, James Eadie and Alistair Walker. Very old vintages from the 1960s and 1970s can still be found, often at modest prices compared to malts of similar age.
