Dallas Dhu was built at the end of the 1890s just south of Forres, on the western edge of Speyside, during the great Victorian whisky boom. For most of its working life it supplied malt for blends, and it was later part of the Distillers Company.
Production stopped in 1983, when many distilleries closed during a downturn in the industry. The site was kept largely intact and is now cared for by Historic Environment Scotland as a museum, giving visitors a rare look at a traditional small distillery.
The spirit is generally described as a fruity, medium-bodied Speyside malt. Official bottlings were scarce, the best known being the 21 Year Old 1975 in the Rare Malts series and an older 12 Year Old.
Most of what reaches buyers today comes from independent bottlers who held casks, including Gordon & MacPhail, whose Private Collection includes 50 year old vintages, Ian Macleod's Chieftain's, Duncan Taylor and The Scotch Malt Whisky Society. As stocks run out, every bottle is now a collector's item.
