Ballantine's takes its name from George Ballantine, who started out as a grocer and wine merchant in Edinburgh in 1827 and went on to sell blended whisky. Over the following century the name grew into a major export blend, and today it is owned by Pernod Ricard through its Scotch whisky company, Chivas Brothers.
Ballantine's is a blend of malt and grain whiskies. The heart of the blend comes from Speyside, with Glenburgie and Miltonduff as its signature malts and Glentauchers also closely tied to the brand. The house style is soft and rounded, with a gentle sweetness.
The everyday bottle is Ballantine's Finest, and older Finest bottlings such as those from the 1980s turn up for collectors. Above it sit aged blends at 10, 12, 17 and 21 years, and the 15 Year Old name has also been used for single malt editions from Glenburgie, Miltonduff and Glentauchers.
Buyers will also find limited editions in the True Music Icons series, with labels for John Lennon, Elton John and Gorillaz, as well as larger formats such as magnums.
