Box

Box Destilleri was founded in Bjärtrå, on the Ångerman river in the High Coast area of northern Sweden, with first distillation in 2010. The buildings were once part of a timber industry site, and the distillery took its name from that history.

In 2017 the distillery changed its name to High Coast Distillery after a trademark dispute with the Scotch blender Compass Box. That is why Compass Box appears linked to it in our data, although it is not an independent bottler of this spirit. Newer releases carry the High Coast name.

The distillery makes two styles of spirit, one unpeated and one peated, and aims for a clean, fruity new make. Very cold river water used in the condensers is often credited with helping that clean character. Maturation is mostly in bourbon casks, with other oak types used for special releases.

Early bottlings under the Box name include the Early Days batches, the 2nd Step Collection and the Quercus series, such as Quercus I Robur, which explore different oak species. Later core releases under High Coast include Dálvve and the Single Malt Explorer. Most bottles are official releases rather than independent bottlings.
