Old Pulteney comes from Pulteney distillery in the fishing town of Wick, Caithness, one of the most northerly distilleries on the Scottish mainland. It was founded in 1826 by James Henderson, at a time when Wick was a busy herring port, and the town's seafaring past runs through the brand's identity.
The distillery is known for its unusual stills. The wash still has a large boil ball and a flat, cut-off top, and the spirit is condensed in worm tubs. The result is a mostly unpeated malt that is fruity and oily, with a light coastal saltiness that drinkers often pick up.
The brand belongs to Inver House Distillers, part of the International Beverage group, which also bottles it. Today's core range is built around aged expressions; in our catalogue you will meet older bottlings such as the 10 Years Old and 16 Years Old, the 18 Year Old and 21 Year Old, the 1983 Vintage, Traveller's Exclusive releases and single casks, plus 30 and 50 year old bottlings marking the distillery's 200th anniversary.
Pulteney also turns up from independent bottlers, for example the 19 Year Old 1999 in Gordon & MacPhail's Connoisseurs Choice series, and in retailer exclusives such as a 2004 single cask for The Whisky Exchange.
