Bushmills stands in the village of the same name on the north coast of County Antrim, close to the Giant's Causeway. The brand links its story to a licence to distil granted in the area in 1608, and the distillery itself has been working since the late 18th century. Today it is owned by Proximo Spirits, part of the Jose Cuervo group.
The spirit is made from unpeated malted barley and is triple distilled, which gives a light, smooth and fruity character. Water comes from St Columb's Rill, a stream that feeds the distillery. Much of the whisky matures in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks.
The ranges a buyer meets most are the blends, The Original and Black Bush, the latter with a high share of malt matured in sherry casks. The single malts include the 10 Year Old, 12 Year Old Distillery Reserve, 16 Year Old and 21 Year Old, along with older bottlings such as the 25 Year Old and limited releases like the American Oak Cask Finish.
Bushmills single malt also appears from independent bottlers, often without the distillery named on the label. In our catalogue these include That Boutique-y Whisky Company, Master of Malt, Forgotten Gems and W.D. O'Connell, and it is the source behind brands such as The Sexton.
