Tamdhu stands by the River Spey at Knockando and was founded in 1897. For most of its life its whisky went into blends. After being mothballed in 2010 it was bought by Ian Macleod Distillers, who restarted production and relaunched it as a single malt.
The modern house style is built on sherry casks: the official whiskies are matured in sherry-seasoned oak, giving a rich, fruity and spicy malt. The spirit itself is unpeated and fairly delicate, which lets the cask lead.
The official range includes the 12 Year Old and older age statements, an earlier 10 Year Old, the Batch Strength releases bottled at cask strength, and the Dalbeallie Dram single casks, named after the old railway halt by the distillery.
Tamdhu is also bottled widely by independents. Gordon & MacPhail (including The MacPhail's Collection), Douglas Laing (Old Malt Cask and Provenance), Hunter Laing (First Editions), Càrn Mòr, The Vintage Malt Whisky Co. (The Cooper's Choice) and That Boutique-y Whisky Company all offer it, often from casks other than sherry.
