Glenfarclas lies near Ballindalloch in Speyside, below the hill of Ben Rinnes. The distillery was licensed in 1836 and bought by John Grant in 1865, and it is still owned and run by the same family through J. & G. Grant. That long family independence is rare among Scotch distilleries and shapes how the whisky is made and sold.
The stills are among the largest in Speyside and are heated by direct gas firing, which many believe adds weight to the spirit. The malt is unpeated, and the whisky is matured largely in sherry casks, giving a rich, rounded style with dried fruit and nutty notes. The distillery keeps a deep stock of old casks, so long-aged whiskies are a regular part of its range.
The core range runs through age statements such as 10, 12, 15, 17, 18, 25, 30 and 40 years, alongside 105 Cask Strength, a strong, younger bottling that has long been a favourite with enthusiasts. Vintage-dated single casks, such as the Family Casks and private reserve bottlings, are sought after by collectors who want a whisky from a particular year.
Glenfarclas appears from independent bottlers less often than many of its neighbours, since the family keeps tight control of its name. Some bottlings do appear, for example from WM Cadenhead, but most buyers will meet the official bottlings.
