Hatozaki is the whisky brand of the Kaikyo Distillery in Akashi, on the coast of Hyogo Prefecture overlooking the Akashi Strait. The distillery belongs to the Akashi Sake Brewery, best known for its Akashi-Tai sake and liqueurs.
The name comes from the Hatozaki lighthouse area close to the distillery. The brewery's background in sake and fruit liqueurs shows in some of the releases, most notably whiskies finished in casks that held umeshu, the Japanese plum liqueur the brewery also makes.
The range a buyer meets includes the Blended Japanese Whisky, the Small Batch Pure Malt (a blend of malt whiskies) and the Small Batch 12 Year Old Umeshu Cask. Other bottlings, such as the Triple Cask Reserve, appear in some markets.
As with many younger Japanese whisky brands, it is worth reading the label carefully to see what each bottling contains and how it is described.
