The Oxford Artisan Distillery opened in 2017 in Headington, on the edge of Oxford. It was the first distillery in the city in a very long time and sets out to make spirits from local farming.
Its focus is on heritage grain. Instead of modern single varieties, it uses old mixed populations of rye, wheat and barley grown organically by farmers in the Oxford area, with grain stories told on the label. This gives a spicy, bready and fruity rye that differs from both American rye and Scotch malt.
The official range centres on Rye Whisky, released in numbered batches and harvest editions such as Purple Grain and Easy Ryder, plus a 3 Year Old, single casks, a Heritage Corn whisky and finishes like the Tawny Pipe. Independent bottlers have also picked up casks, including Berry Bros. & Rudd, That Boutique-y Whisky Company and Master of Malt.
