Coleburn stood in Speyside, a few miles south of Elgin, and was built at the end of the 1890s during the great boom in Scotch whisky distilling. For most of its life it belonged to the Distillers Company and its successors, and its spirit was made to fill blends rather than to be sold as a single malt.
The distillery stopped producing in 1985, during a period when many distilleries were closed across the industry. It never reopened, and the buildings were later sold for other use, so the stock left in casks from before closure is all there will ever be.
Official bottlings were very rare, which means the whisky a buyer meets today comes almost entirely from independent bottlers. Gordon & MacPhail has released old vintages in its Rare Old and Private Collection ranges, including a 1972 cask for its 125th Anniversary. Douglas Laing has bottled it in the Old Malt Cask series, and Signatory Vintage and Mackillop's Choice have offered single casks from the 1970s and early 1980s.
These are old and scarce bottlings, often 20 to 47 years in cask, and they are bought mostly by collectors and drinkers curious about lost distilleries.
