Glenury Royal was built in 1825 near Stonehaven, south of Aberdeen, by Captain Robert Barclay, a local landowner. The 'Royal' in its name came with permission from King William IV. It worked for more than 150 years before being closed in 1983 by the Distillers Company, and the site was later cleared.
Because no new spirit has been made for four decades, every bottle now comes from old stocks and is long aged. Older official 12 Year Old bottlings from the 1970s and 1980s still appear on the secondary market.
The owners released aged vintages in the Rare Malts series, such as the 1970 and 1971 bottlings, and later through Diageo Special Releases, including 36 Year Old editions. Independent bottlers have also offered casks, notably Gordon & MacPhail in its Connoisseurs Choice range, Duncan Taylor and Signatory. These are collector's bottles, and prices reflect their scarcity.
