The Spot whiskeys began with Mitchell & Son, a family of wine merchants in Dublin. Like many Irish merchants, they once filled their own casks with whiskey from the distilleries and marked the casks with a dab of coloured paint to show the age. The colours became the names of the whiskeys.
The whiskey was originally drawn from Jameson's Bow Street distillery in Dublin. Today it is distilled and matured at the Midleton distillery in County Cork by Irish Distillers. It is single pot still whiskey, made from a mash of malted and unmalted barley and distilled three times in copper pot stills, a style that gives a creamy, spicy and fruity whiskey.
Green Spot is the everyday bottling and the one most buyers meet first. Yellow Spot, Red Spot, Blue Spot and Gold Spot are older, stronger or more limited: Blue Spot Cask Strength is a seven-year-old at full strength, and Gold Spot appears here as a 9 Year Old and as Gold Spot 13 Year Old - The Generations Edition. Green Spot is also released with wine cask finishes, such as the Quails' Gate Pinot Noir Finish from a Canadian winery.
Our catalogue also holds single casks bottled for retailers, such as the Green Spot, Yellow Spot and Red Spot casks exclusive to The Whisky Exchange and a Vinsanto single cask for Master of Malt. These are one-off releases, so strength and character vary from cask to cask.
