Hanyu stood in the town of Hanyu in Saitama Prefecture, north of Tokyo. It belonged to Toa Shuzo, a drinks company run by the Akuto family, which made whisky there alongside its other products.

The distillery stopped producing in 2000 and its equipment was later removed. Ichiro Akuto, grandson of the founder, secured the remaining stock of casks, and many of them were bottled under his Ichiro's Malt name while he built the Chichibu distillery nearby.

The best known releases are the Card series, single casks labelled with playing cards, together with The Joker bottlings that closed the set. Our catalogue also lists The Game editions, Mizunara Wood Reserve and festival bottlings such as Whisky Talk Fukuoka. Because the stock is finite, prices for these bottles are high and keep rising.

As well as the Ichiro's Malt releases, Hanyu casks have been bottled by independent bottlers, including Number One Drinks Company, Malts of Scotland and Part des Anges, usually as single casks from vintages in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000.
