Banff distillery stood at Inverboyndie, just west of the town of Banff on the Moray Firth coast. It dates from the early 19th century and was later owned by the Distillers Company. It is remembered for being hit in a German air raid in 1941, when burning warehouses sent whisky into the local fields and drains.
The distillery closed in 1983 and most of its buildings have since been demolished, so no new spirit will ever be made. What remains are casks filled before closure, which makes every bottling an old and increasingly scarce whisky.
Official bottlings are very rare; the best known is the 21 Year Old 1982 in the owner's Rare Malts series. Most Banff a buyer will find comes from independent bottlers: Gordon & MacPhail's Connoisseurs Choice and Rare Old, Douglas Laing and Hunter Laing's Old & Rare Platinum, Duncan Taylor's Rarest of the Rare and Tantalus, and releases from Ian Macleod. Many of these are single casks distilled in the 1960s and 1970s, priced as collectors' bottles.
