J.G. Thomson & Co. takes its name from a historic wine and spirits merchant in Leith, the port district of Edinburgh. The firm was associated with The Vaults, the old Leith warehouse that is now home to the Scotch Malt Whisky Society.
The name was revived as a whisky brand by The Artisanal Spirits Company, the group behind the Society. Rather than single casks from named distilleries, the brand focuses on blends built from the group's stock of casks.
The core line is organised by flavour: Smoky, Rich and Sweet Blended Malt, some released in numbered batches such as Rich Batch 01 and Sweet Batch 01. Alongside these come older releases, including a 23 Year Old and a 27 Year Old 1996 Rich Blended Malt.
The brand has also released very old blended grain Scotch distilled in 1972, bottled in batches at 51 years old. These are rare, collectable bottlings and are priced accordingly.
