Barrell Craft Spirits was founded in Louisville, Kentucky by Joe Beatrice. It does not distill its own spirit. Instead it buys mature barrels from distilleries in several states, and sometimes beyond, and blends them into its own releases.
The house style is cask strength: whiskeys are bottled at the strength they reach after blending, without reduction. Each batch is numbered and its recipe changes, so Barrell Bourbon Batch 036 is a different whiskey from earlier or later batches, and the label gives the details of age and proof.
Alongside the batches, Barrell builds blends finished in other casks. Seagrass Rye combines rye whiskeys finished in casks such as Martinique rum, Madeira and apricot brandy barrels, and Dovetail is a whiskey finished in casks including rum and port. Gray Label and Gold Label versions are older, limited editions of these blends, and the Cask Finish Series explores further finishes.
Other names buyers will meet include Barrell Vantage Bourbon, the 5 Year Old Foundation Bourbon and the Cigar Blend. Prices and availability vary widely between the regular releases and the limited Gray and Gold Label bottlings.
