Wilderness Trail Distillery was founded in Danville, Kentucky, in 2012 by Shane Baker and Pat Heist, who came from a background in fermentation science and yeast supply to other distillers. In 2022 Campari Group took a majority stake in the business.

The distillery is known for using a sweet mash process rather than the sour mash common in Kentucky, meaning each fermentation starts fresh without backset from a previous batch. Its bourbon uses wheat as the secondary grain, giving a softer profile, while its rye leans on a high share of rye grain for spice.

Buyers will meet the Small Batch Bourbon and Small Batch Rye, which are bottled in bond, alongside Single Barrel Bourbon, cask strength rye and a 6 Year Old Bourbon. The Family Reserve bottlings are single barrels, each identified by a barrel code such as 17E19-5, so two bottles from different barrels can taste noticeably different.

Most Wilderness Trail is bottled by the distillery itself. Our catalogue also links it with Wildjac, which bottles spirit from here.
